Hopea worked in furniture design from 1946 to 1948 and then joined metalsmith Paavo Tynell’s company from 1948 to 1952. She then joined Nuutajärvi glassworks where she designed glassware, and her work epitomized the minimalist ideal of 1950s Finnish style, which had been influenced by the Bauhaus design philosophy.
The glass village of Nuutajarvi was founded in 1793 by Jacob Wilhelm de Pont and Harald Furnhjelm. The location was perfect because of the forest resources, as firing the glass required a lot of firewood. Among the many glass factories of its time, Nuutajarvi still stands out from the others. It was the oldest working glass factory in Finland until it merged with Iittala in 1988.
