Heinz H. Engler was born in 1928 in Biberach an der Riss. 1944-1945 he was an air force helper in Danzig. In 1949 he graduated from the Wieland-Gymnasium in Biberach and then learned the pottery trade in the Upper Swabian pottery workshop in his hometown. In 1950-52 he graduated from the higher technical college for ceramics in Höhr-Grenzhausen . From 1952 to 1963 he managed the Upper Swabian pottery workshop together with his future wife Margarethe Frauer. After working as a designer for the Arabia ceramics company in Helsinki in 1956-57, he opened his own model development studio in Biberach. From 1958 to 1968 he developed hollow glass designs for the Wiesenthalhütte in Schwäbisch Gmünd. In 1958 and 1962 he received the State Prize for Design and Crafts of the State of Baden-Württemberg . In 1967 he was appointed to the chair for ceramic product design at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts. From 1972 he worked both as chief designer at the porcelain factory Gebr. Bauscher in Weiden in der Oberpfalz and as a designer for the company Stölzle Glasindustrie in Vienna .
